El culto a esta deidad del agua, documentada desde el Preclásico, está vigente entre los campesinos de la península de Yucatán. Sus acciones, relacionadas con la producción agrícola, la lluvia, el relámpago y el trueno, se manifestaban en todos los rumbos del cosmos, razón por la que es uno (Yaxal Chaak) en el centro, y cuatro al mismo tiempo, asociados con cada rumbo y color de los cuadrantes del universo. Los documentos coloniales registran el nombre de esos cuatro con el prefijo xib (varón). El más conocido es el Chaak Rojo del Este, denominado Chak Xib Chaak, nombre con el que aparece en vasijas policromas. Se le ha relacionado con el dios GI y en los textos del Templo de la Cruz de Palenque se registra que de la tríada divina fue el primero en nacer. Se trata de una de las manifestaciones de Itzamnaaj asociada con la fertilidad, razón por la que varios gobernantes usaron al dios Chaak como parte de su nombre o de su atuendo. En los códices se le representa con cuerpo humano o de serpiente y un rostro fantástico en el que destaca su larga trompa con atributos de serpiente, lagarto y tapir. Su color por excelencia es el azul (yax: azul y verde); puede portar una vasija para derramar agua (de su cuerpo también puede manar agua); un hacha con la que produce truenos y relámpagos, o antorchas que aluden a las sequías de los tiempos calurosos. En el Clásico, con trompa menos pronunciada, se le reconoce por sus barbas semejantes al del pez bagre, orejeras de concha y una diadema de concha recortada como atributo de fecundidad.
